Can You Take a Rental Car to Another State?

Many people like to travel. Some people even enjoy traveling while they are traveling. What this means is that they will set aside days in which they take side trips to other locations in the same general area as their initial destination. Unfortunately, many people who do this don’t often take their rental cars because of the costs and their inability to track down a decisive answer from the rental company in this matter.

Nevertheless, it is perfectly acceptable to take small trips, even to other states, when you rent a car. Very few companies have an issue with this because it is still in one country and, in the event that you are an unsavory character, their car can be recovered quite easily. In most situations the few companies that have an issue with it will still allow it with prior notice and if they absolutely refuse, they will be very straight forward about the matter in email, telephone or personal conversations. With most companies, there is generally no extra charge for extended travel (as in across state lines) as long as you choose to use an unlimited mileage agreement with your particular rental company and as long as it’s not a one-way rental. However, they will rarely allow you to cross into another country with their car unless you contact a subsidiary of their company and exchange vehicles, which can get costly.

After you’ve decided to go forward with taking the car across state lines there is really nothing that forces you to inform the company that you rented from. Nevertheless, it is important to be upfront about your intentions as many car rental companies have tracking devices installed on their fleet to ensure that you’re not using the car in a manner that violates the terms of your agreement.

“Name Your Price” Car Rental

If you’re vacationing in Los Angeles, you’ll probably want to rent a car so you can easily get around to see the many sights without relying on expensive cab rides.

One of the best ways to get a great price on a rental car is to go the name-your-own-price route. Priceline is the most popular site for this. Priceline rents cars that car rental companies have not been able to rent in more traditional ways. Priceline works with Alamo, Avis, Budget, Hertz, and National car rental companies.

Reserve your car a few months in advance so you can be sure of getting a car. Ideally, before going to Priceline, take a few minutes to research what cars in the Los Angeles area are renting for on the dates of your travel.

To use Priceline to rent a car, you must go to the website and answer a few simple questions, such as the dates of the car rental, what type of car you want, and where you want to pick the car up and drop it off. You must also provide the name of the driver of the car. You will then be asked to enter a “bid.” You can usually get away with bidding about 40% less than the going rental prices.

If your bid is accepted, you will be told which car rental company you will be working with. No money changes hands until you actually pick the car up and, unlike some services on Priceline, you can change or cancel your reservation at any time.

If your bid is too low, it will be rejected and you will have to try again with a slightly higher bid.

Priceline provides an easy and economic way for you to get around Los Angeles during your visit there.
