Can You Take a Rental Car to Another State?

Filed under: LAX Car Rental - 29 Mar 2010  | Spread the word !

[Facebook] [Twitter]

Many people like to travel. Some people even enjoy traveling while they are traveling. What this means is that they will set aside days in which they take side trips to other locations in the same general area as their initial destination. Unfortunately, many people who do this don’t often take their rental cars because of the costs and their inability to track down a decisive answer from the rental company in this matter.

Nevertheless, it is perfectly acceptable to take small trips, even to other states, when you rent a car. Very few companies have an issue with this because it is still in one country and, in the event that you are an unsavory character, their car can be recovered quite easily. In most situations the few companies that have an issue with it will still allow it with prior notice and if they absolutely refuse, they will be very straight forward about the matter in email, telephone or personal conversations. With most companies, there is generally no extra charge for extended travel (as in across state lines) as long as you choose to use an unlimited mileage agreement with your particular rental company and as long as it’s not a one-way rental. However, they will rarely allow you to cross into another country with their car unless you contact a subsidiary of their company and exchange vehicles, which can get costly.

After you’ve decided to go forward with taking the car across state lines there is really nothing that forces you to inform the company that you rented from. Nevertheless, it is important to be upfront about your intentions as many car rental companies have tracking devices installed on their fleet to ensure that you’re not using the car in a manner that violates the terms of your agreement.

“Name Your Price” Car Rental

Filed under: LAX Car Rental - 18 Mar 2010  | Spread the word !

[Facebook] [Twitter]

If you’re vacationing in Los Angeles, you’ll probably want to rent a car so you can easily get around to see the many sights without relying on expensive cab rides.

One of the best ways to get a great price on a rental car is to go the name-your-own-price route. Priceline is the most popular site for this. Priceline rents cars that car rental companies have not been able to rent in more traditional ways. Priceline works with Alamo, Avis, Budget, Hertz, and National car rental companies.

Reserve your car a few months in advance so you can be sure of getting a car. Ideally, before going to Priceline, take a few minutes to research what cars in the Los Angeles area are renting for on the dates of your travel.

To use Priceline to rent a car, you must go to the website and answer a few simple questions, such as the dates of the car rental, what type of car you want, and where you want to pick the car up and drop it off. You must also provide the name of the driver of the car. You will then be asked to enter a “bid.” You can usually get away with bidding about 40% less than the going rental prices.

If your bid is accepted, you will be told which car rental company you will be working with. No money changes hands until you actually pick the car up and, unlike some services on Priceline, you can change or cancel your reservation at any time.

If your bid is too low, it will be rejected and you will have to try again with a slightly higher bid.

Priceline provides an easy and economic way for you to get around Los Angeles during your visit there.

Be Careful Driving in LA

Filed under: LAX Car Rental - 26 Feb 2010  | Spread the word !

[Facebook] [Twitter]

I’d like to think of myself as a pretty astute driver in my hometown. I make sure to do all of the legal things like indicating when changing lanes, and stopping completely at stop signs even if no one is coming. Even when I do those things, I’m still pretty quick with reaction times and moving between gas and brake while driving during rush hour too. But, nothing could have prepared me for the hell that is LA traffic. Unless you’ve experienced it, it’s impossible to describe the lunacy that some people have as they swerve from lane to lane on Highway 101 and cut in front of you as you’re trying to get off at an exit.

Presuming you’re looking at renting a car in LA, make sure you have nerves of steel before you hit the streets. The locals don’t seem to think anything of their crazy driving style, but for me, a small town guy that thought he knew how the road rules worked, I was out of my element. When you’re trying to get onto the highway, the best advice I have is to just go for it. Drivers in the innermost lane will normally slow down if they see you revving into traffic. And, when trying to come off at an exit, just to make sure you don’t upset the other drivers on the road, don’t slow down until you absolutely have to. Lastly, when navigating the main roads in LA, like Hollywood Boulevard and the other hotspots, watch out for cars pulling into traffic from shopping centers and parking lots. Because cars are allowed to park on the sides of the streets in LA, there is zero visibility for anyone trying to pull out from behind them. To combat this, they normally swing right out into oncoming traffic and hope for the best. So, keep your guard up and best of luck on the streets of LA!

Car Rental Companies Which Guarantee a Rack

Filed under: LAX Car Rental - 16 Feb 2010  | Spread the word !

[Facebook] [Twitter]

Are you looking for a LAX car rental that guarantees a rack? We’ll pay close attention to every line on this page because you’ll learn exactly how to have all your needs met. There’s some good news and some bad news. First, the bad news. Most rental car companies at LAX won’t take the risk of guaranteeing you a rack on your rental. The good news is that you can request one in advance or purchase an add on. Here’s some information on some rental car companies that may be able to give you what you want.

Thrifty Car Rental and Dollar Rent A Car may have some SUV’s and Minivans with roof racks. The thing to do is to put in a request for a LAX car rental with a roof rack. However, there’s no guarantee that you’ll actually receive one. Avis Car Rental and Budget Rent A Car offers some of their SUV’s and Minivans with roof racks. There’s no guarantee, but you can request one with your reservation and ask to have it marked on your reservation. They will put forth an effort to get you what you want, but the agent can’t guarantee it.

Lastly there’s Enterprise who will also allow you to request a SUV or minivan with a roof rack. Again, there’s no guarantee that you’ll drive off the lot with a vehicle that has roof rack. Make your request and ask to have it took down on your reservation. If all else fails, bite the bullet and purchase an add on roof rack that can be strapped to the roof of the vehicle. But here’s the kicker: You will be liable for any damage or scratches that could occur. Make sure you have the proper insurance coverage to protect yourself.

[Facebook] [Twitter]

Los Angeles is the New York of the west coast. It is a huge hub for business and tourism. This can complicate things a bit when you go to rent a car while in Los Angeles. Here are a few things you should know about renting a car when you travel there:

-The Traffic is Terrible. Los Angeles is notorious for having some of the worst traffic in the entire United States. As if driving in a location that you weren’t familiar with wesnt hard enough on your nerves, now you have to deal with rush hour traffic that lasts the entire day. Try not to get frustrated, and remember to research alternate routes online before trying to treck down the freeways of Los Angeles.

-The Cities are Far Apart. Driving in LA is not like renting a car in Las Vegas or other big cities. Because the various places you may want to travel in sourthern California may be so far apart, you may be liable to put quite a few miles on your rental vehicle. Try setting a limit on the number of miles you want to put on your rental vehicle, as many rental companies charge extra if you go over a certain number of miles.

-It can get hot in California. You might want to make sure whatever car you rent comes with air conditioning.

-You won’t find a whole lot of parallel parking spots in Los Angeles. For the most part, parking at all of the most popular venues in the city have a large parking lot, and you shouldnt have to worry too much about the size of your car.

Don’t let flight delays drive you crazy

Filed under: LAX Car Rental - 05 Jan 2010  | Spread the word !

[Facebook] [Twitter]

No one likes to wait for hours at the airport. Some of the most common problems, for example rough weather and the resulting air traffic delays, are outside the airlines’ control. Nonetheless, you can take steps to reduce your odds of coming up against most issues and limit their effects.

When booking your flight, remember a flight that leaves early in the day is less sure to be delayed than a later flight. Also, if an early flight does get delayed or canceled, you can have more rerouting options. If you book the last flight of the day and it is canceled, you might get stuck overnite.

Generally, you are most unlikely to be delayed on non stop flights. If you select a flight with an overnite stop or connection, try and select one stopping at the least-congested enroute airfield to lower the risk of delay or misconnection. For example, airfields in the south of the USA could have less winter snowstorms but more spring and summer thunderstorms.

When booking a connection, always check the quantity of time between flights. Ask yourself what will occur if the 1st flight is delayed, if you do not like the answer, pick another flight or ask the agent to make a connection that permits more time.

Certain airfields are way more congested than others are (due to the popularity of cheap airfares. Also, flights during top travel times of the day ( e.g, 4:00-6:00 p.m. ) are far more at the mercy of delay. Examine flights to all airfields that serve your destination town Ask about the on-time performance of each flight you are considering.

Call the airline well before your exit time to check on your flight’s standing. If there’s a problem, try and rebook over the phone. While airlines regularly attempt to call to tell you of schedule changes, it might not be possible to do so if the airline becomes aware about the delay only just before the flight. Also, ensure your airline’s record of your reservation contains a phone number where you may be reached, or you will lose any opportunity of being called about a delay or flight change. If your flight is delayed, try to discover how late it is going to be so you can appraise your options. But bear in mind that it is often tough for airlines to guess the total duration of a delay during its early stages.
